WorkSafe ACT has invited all employers and workers to reflect on their workplace safety culture and practices during October, the National Work Safety Month (NSWM).

WorkSafe ACT said this year’s theme was Work Health and Safety through COVID-19, which recognised the impacts the coronavirus pandemic was having on local businesses, employers and workers.

Work Health and Safety Commissioner, Jacqueline Agius said that throughout October and every day, workplace safety should be a key focus for all workers, in all industries, at all levels.

“Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and this month, I encourage all employers and workers to make a commitment to building a safe and healthy workplace,” Ms Agius said.

“We understand the challenges employers and workers have faced this year as COVID-19 has impacted our home and work lives,” she said.

“It’s important we take this opportunity to assess the work health and safety methods in our workplaces and make improvements to make sure they are still effective.”

Ms Agius said WorkSafe ACT inspectors had been working with businesses to ensure that they understood the rules around social distancing and hygiene to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

“WorkSafe ACT will continue monitoring workplaces to make sure they have a COVID safe plan in place, as well as offer psychological health and safety supports through the Mentally Healthier Workplaces initiative,” she said.

She said that as part of NSWM, WorkSafe ACT had launched Territory specific webinars and links to resources to support employers and workers.
