Winter wood heating campaign warms up

The Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate has launched its annual winter heating campaign encouraging Canberrans to use wood heaters correctly for safe, clean air.

Minister for the Environment, Rebecca Vassarotti encouraged people with wood heaters to consider switching to a more environmentally-friendly option, saying the Directorate’s long-running campaign, Burn Right Tonight, also highlights how to use them effectively in the meantime.

“Canberra is back to enjoying very good air quality but smoke from household wood heaters remains the main source of air pollution during winter,” Ms Vassarotti said.

“Maintaining good air quality is an environmental priority, a health priority, and after the trauma of the 2019 fires, a mental health priority in our community as well,” she said.

“This is an empowering opportunity for Canberrans to cut wood smoke pollution, look after your local environment, and look after the health of your neighbours all over this region.”

Ms Vassarotti said people with wood heaters should only use dry, well-seasoned, untreated wood from reputable merchants; start fires with the air control fully open; use smaller logs; and never let the heater smoulder overnight.

“Following these tips will improve our air quality, save you money and keep your home warm this winter,” she said.

She said ACT residents wishing to switch to a less polluting heating option could take advantage of Territory rebates of up to $1,250 to remove and replace their wood burning heater.
