The Department of Communications and the Arts has launched a new Accesshub website to assist people with hearing or speech impairment make decisions about available technology that may meet their needs.

The Department’s new website provides current information about what to consider when buying technology to ensure it meets accessibility needs.

In a statement, the Department said the new website included information about accessibility features on popular devices and the best options for low-cost and free software and devices.

“Disability, impairment or functional limitation is experienced by a much higher percentage of Australians than is commonly thought,” the Department said.

“The initiative is all about providing equal access to technology for people with hearing, sight or cognitive issues or disabilities, which is both affordable and easy to use.”

It said there were plenty of good products on the market that contained accessibility features, however it was often hard to work out which ones were well suited and which options were best on a limited budget.

“This resource has been created to help you make educated choices on options priced up to $250,” the Department said.

“To find out more about different communication options to help you stay connected, see our information on mainstream communication options on Accesshub.”

It said it was on the lookout for new products and services and would be updating the website’s pages regularly.
