Waste collectors strike a day off

Household waste and recycling kerbside collections are to be disrupted next Monday (2 November) due to industrial action by drivers.

The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate said the Transport Workers’ Union, which represents drivers employed by the waste collection company Suez, had provided notice that industrial action would take place as part of ongoing enterprise bargaining negotiations.

The Directorate said 23 suburbs would be affected by the industrial action and missed collections would not be caught up.

“From Saturday 31 October to Sunday 8 November 2020 excess household waste of up to three large plastic garbage bags can be disposed of for free,” the Directorate said.

“Recyclable materials can continue to be dropped off for free at the ACT Government Recycling Drop Off Centres,” it said.

The Directorate said excess household waste could be disposed of at temporary rubbish only drop‑off sites at Waramanga, Walpiri Place, off Namatjira Drive; Kambah, 66 Springbett Street; Gowrie, 7 Finlay Place; Weston, Hilder Street, at the Weston Neighbourhood Oval; Symonston, Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre; and Mitchell, Mitchell Resource Management Centre, Flemington Road.

“Proof of ACT residency such as a driver’s licence will need to be provided to demonstrate the resident is from a suburb whose scheduled bin collection will be affected,” it said.

“Green waste bin services, bulky waste collections and the wheeled bin assistance service are unaffected by the industrial action and will continue as normal.”

The Directorate said it would keep the community informed of the industrial action and any further impacts to Canberra residents.
