The Australian War Memorial is to open the doors of its storage facility in Mitchell next month to give visitors an exciting behind-the-scenes look at its extensive collection.

Director of the Memorial, Matt Anderson said a limited number of free, timed tickets to the Big Things in Store event on Saturday 5 March had been released and were available to book on the Memorial’s website.

“Held at the Australian War Memorial’s Treloar Technology Centre in Mitchell, this event is a unique opportunity for members of the public to experience a behind-the-scenes look at the Memorial’s extensive collection,” Mr Anderson said.

“It includes aircraft, rockets, vehicles, tanks, artillery and equipment used by – or against – Australians for over a century,” he said.

“This year, visitors also have the opportunity to take a closer look at the F/A-18 Classic Hornet aircraft – a new addition to the Memorial’s collection which was retired after more than 30 years of service on 9 June 2020.”

Mr Anderson said the much-loved G for George Avro Lancaster Mk I Bomber, (pictured) would also be on display.

The Director said an event like Big Things in Store allowed people, young and old, to gain a deeper understanding of the nation’s military history.

“It allows people to see more of the collection for a limited time than what’s currently on display,” he said.
