Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) is encouraging children to walk to school this week for Winter Walk to School Week.

The Directorate said the Winter Walk to School Week was an initiative run by the Physical Activity Foundation, encouraging students to walk, ride, skate, or scoot to school even in the colder months.

“During winter in Canberra it can be hard to stay motivated and get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity that children need every day,” the Directorate said.

“Winter Walk to School Week is the perfect way to encourage your children to engage in active travel to school, despite the chilly mornings,” it said.

TCCS released tips for parents and carers to help children ride or walk to school safely.

“Practice, practice, practice – ride or walk with your children to school during the week or on the weekend,” it said.

“Make sure they can find their way to and from school, you may want to set some challenges for them along the way, such as identifying three landmarks or signs.”

It said parents and carers should take the time to check over their child’s bike to make sure it was safe before using it to get to school.

TCCS also recommended parents and carers prepare a plan with their children in case something went wrong; talk to them about safely riding or walking; and talk to other parents in their community to see if children could travel to school together.
