The Productivity Commission’s latest Report on Government Services (RoGs) has shown Queensland as a leader in Vocational Education and Training (VET) after recording the nation’s highest rate of student course completions.

Minister for Training and Skills Development, Shannon Fentimen said that with almost 60 qualifications completed per 1,000 people in 2018, Queensland was leading all other jurisdictions.

“This is great news for Queenslanders, and it means more students are gaining world class training that will prepare them to take their future on,” Ms Fentimen said.

In the 2020 Report on Government Services, Queensland’s score of 59.9 qualifications per 1,000 people, compared well against States and Territories, with NSW recording a score of 39.9 and Victoria a score of 44.2.

The Queensland result was also well above the Australian average of 44.1.

“We know nine out of 10 jobs predicted to grow will require a VET qualification,” Ms Fentimen said.

“And that’s why we’re backing more young Queenslanders to undertake skills and training with our free TAFE and free apprenticeships initiatives,” she said.

“A free apprenticeship is a ticket to a job and already we are supporting more than 16,600 young Queenslanders to gain a valuable qualification for free.”

The report also showed the rate of completions among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Queensland was second only to the ACT.
