Schools across NSW are celebrating Education Week virtually this week (26-30 July), starting with a live-streamed launch on Monday featuring student stories from schools across the State.
The Department of Education said the theme for Education Week this year was Lifelong learners, to celebrate education as a lifelong journey.
“From before a child enters an early childhood setting, progressing to primary and secondary school, and continuing their learning journey into adulthood; learning a trade, entering tertiary education, or the workforce,” the Department said.
It said that, this year, Education Week would be celebrated through a variety of online events, including a parent and carers webinar; Education LIVE, featuring an animal of the day and special guests; Learning through Country; a virtual art exhibition; and digital learning opportunities, with virtual excursions and tours.
Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning, Sarah Mitchell used the start of Education Week to thank students, teachers, early childhood educators and parents for their contribution to the education system over what had been a challenging 18 months.
“Our schools have successfully managed droughts, bushfires, floods and a pandemic, and it is all thanks to the efforts of all the people who make up each individual school community,” Ms Mitchell said.
“Education Week has been a highlight of the NSW public education calendar for more than 60 years and this year, more than ever, our schools deserve to be celebrated,” she said.
“Teachers have stepped up in every aspect.
“Despite the challenges, schools were prepared for this current lockdown in Greater Sydney and continue to improve.”
Ms Mitchell said that as recently as last week, NSW teachers had spent time upskilling in their remote teaching practices, with nearly 2,000 teachers attending the Department’s live sessions, and over 2,500 viewings of recorded webinars.
The Minister said early childhood educators were also continuing to provide vital services for families during the pandemic.
