The Victorian Government is enhancing the capacity of the state’s schools to provide hands-on learning experiences and develop real-world skills in the classroom.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll announced that nine schools would share almost $50,000 through the Lynne Kosky Memorial Applied Learning Grants.
The grants will be allocated to schools offering the VCE Vocational Major or Victorian Pathways Certificate. They provide support for community-focused, innovative projects that tie in-school learning with real-life experiences.
The following schools will receive the grants:
- Hampton Park Secondary College
- Hester Hornbook Academy
- John Paul College
- Merri River School
- Corryong College
- Echuca Twin River Specialist School
- Gleneagles Secondary College
- Rushworth P-12 College
- Yea High School.
As an example, Hampton Park Secondary College will receive funding to support an intergenerational volunteering project in partnership with Lynbrook Park Aged Care and Dementia Australia.
Gleneagles Secondary College will use the money to develop a community cookbook aimed at celebrating the school’s cultural diversity.
Rushworth P-12 College will establish a student-led media production hub in partnership with Waranga News, a local news organisation.
Hester Hornbrook Academy will produce a children’s literature podcast with a local publisher, hoping to re-engage students who have become uninterested in education, by bringing them back to the joy of learning.
“We’re giving more students the chance to develop real-world skills and build lifelong careers,” Mr Carroll said.
“We’re backing young Victorians to follow their passions and gain skills for the jobs they want.”
The Victorian Labor Government has included this program within a wider context of education support, including Free TAFE, 121 new schools and Free Kinder.
