The Victorian Government is equipping Victorian State Emergency Service volunteers with new technology and equipment to respond to callouts faster.
Minister for Emergency Services Paul Edbrooke visited the Emerald unit to thank volunteers and encourage Victorians to prepare for storm season.
The visit highlighted the importance of the SES, with the Emerald unit alone responding to 930 requests during the past storm season.
Emerald is one of 16 new units the government has created, reflecting a doubling of funding for emergency services to more than $2.4 billion this year.
“Labor is backing VICSES volunteers with the equipment and resources to keep us safe,” Mr Edbrooke said.
“Every Victorian can take simple steps now to protect their home, their family and our amazing first responders when emergencies strike.”
A new funding injection of $7.2 million will go towards two portable cell service towers, 15 Starlink kits and five portable kits to improve communications during emergencies.
Member for Monbulk Daniela De Martino said: “Our VICSES volunteers do extraordinary work, and we’re proud to back them with the equipment and support they need to keep our community safe for years to come.”
The funding will also provide five new Bobcat units to clear fallen trees, two trucks with water rescue pods, and additional dry suits and waders to help during floods.
This builds on the largest-ever Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment Program, with $31 million available for crews around the state.
The government is also backing the Are You Storm Ready? campaign to help Victorians understand how best to prepare for wet-weather events.
To prepare for storm season, people are being urged to clear gutters and trim branches around their properties.
