The Victorian Labor Government is helping the state’s apprentices save more than $59 million in total on their vehicle registration with a new scheme.
The Trade Apprentice Registration Discount scheme has issued more than 60,000 registrations, saving apprentices up to $390 a year.
More than 22,000 trainees and apprentices have benefited from the program so far.
The scheme supports apprentices and trainees who rely on their vehicle to go to work, job sites or training.
This includes apprentices who carry tools for work or who drive overnight.
The scheme serves two main purposes: smoothing the way for the next generation of skilled workers and easing the cost of living for those trying to upskill.
“We want apprentices focused on building their skills and training for the jobs of the future — not worrying about the cost of car registration,” Minister for Skills and TAFE Colin Brooks said.
“This is helping ease cost-of-living pressures while supporting the next generation of skilled workers.”
The Trade Apprentice Registration Discount comes alongside the upcoming registration rebate for eligible motorists.
Under this scheme, from 1 June, vehicle owners will be able to apply for 20 per cent off their registration bill through Service Victoria. Applications close on 31 July.
It is open to Victorians who use light vehicles for personal use, such as utes, cars and anything under 4.5 tonnes.
The government hopes these measures will ease the financial burdens of motorists and vehicle owners.
Applications for the Trade Apprentice Registration Discount can be made on the myVicRoads website.
