Victoria’s Government has appointed an experienced public-sector leader as the inaugural head of the Victorian Early Childhood Regulatory Authority (VECRA).
Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn announced that Wendy Steendam AM APM will lead the new authority starting 1 July.
Ms Steendam brings more than 40 years of public-sector experience and leadership to the position.
This experience includes 11 years as the Deputy Commissioner of Victoria Police. Ms Steendam has been recognised for her work, with the Australian Police Medal, being made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) and earning a place on the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.
While with the police, she worked in portfolios responsible for relevant issues such as sexual assault, child abuse and family violence response.
Much of this leadership has been within complicated regulatory and enforcement environments, preparing her well for the VECRA role.
Ms Steendam will oversee the registration, regulation and licensing of more than 5000 services across the state.
VECRA was formed on 1 January this year and operates as a strong, independent regulator with greater powers, resources and inspection ability.
The government outlined VECRA’s need for a public servant with experience in complex regulatory fields.
VECRA has already increased compliance checks in the field.
“Every parent deserves to know their child is safe and cared for — that’s exactly what VECRA delivers,” Minister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn said.
“Wendy Steendam has spent her career protecting Victorians, and she is well placed to continue this work at VECRA.”
