Attorney-General, Gordon Ramsay has announced the Territory is looking for a new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The incumbent, Jon White (pictured) has had his term extended until 31 December while a selection process is conducted.
Mr Ramsay said the DPP leads a busy Office that responds to increasingly complex cases, including family violence matters.
“An extensive recruitment search over the coming months will ensure the ACT attracts suitable and competitive applications,” Mr Ramsay said.
“The DPP in the ACT is unique, with the Office performing more functions than in any other State and Territory.”
He said this made the role appealing to legal practitioners who wanted to work closely with victims and police to achieve justice on behalf of the community.
“I’m pleased that while time is taken to ensure an open and transparent selection can occur, Mr White will continue to lead the Office of the DPP,” Mr Ramsay said.
He said the Office of the DPP was established by the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1990 to institute, conduct and supervise prosecutions and related proceedings.
Mr Ramsay said the Act provides that the Office be controlled by the Director — an independent statutory officer who makes prosecutorial decisions on a professional basis.
The appointment can be made for up to seven years.
