Ross Pamment: 30 years experience with Houghton.

By John Rozentals.

Houghton’s mid priced Reserve range provides good easy drinking that is excellent value for money.

I recently tried three of the range and found them all great food wines which is what you expect for your dollar.

The range has been produced under the leadership of Houghton Senior Winemaker Ross Pamment who has been making wine for the company, one of the State’s largest, for some 30 years.

The wines are line priced at $14.99.

WINE REVIEWS

Houghton 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon: a medium-bodied dry red made from grapes grown in the cool Frankland River and Margaret River districts. Cassis and blackberries dominate a wine with distinct tannins. Drink with lamb chops.

Houghton 2018 Reserve Chardonnay: a fruit-driven white wine dominated by grapes from the warm Swan Valley where the company was founded in the 1800s. Full flavours are led by stone fruit and citrus. Drink with white-sauced pasta such as spaghetti alfredo.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Houghton 2017 Reserve Shiraz: a medium-bodied juicy red with fresh peppery overtones and loads of dark berries in the French Rhone Valley style. Throw a good-quality steak on the barbie and cook to medium-rare at most. Serve with lots of salad and chips.
