The University of Western Australia (UWA) as officially opened its new campus in Mumbai, strengthening the economic and educational ties between India and WA.
Premier Roger Cook joined UWA leaders on campus in Andheri East, delivering an address and unveiling a commemorative plaque to mark the occasion.
A second UWA campus is set to open, in Chennai, in October.
The Premier highlighted India’s importance to Western Australia, outlining how UWA’s presence in Mumbai would improve an already productive relationship.
“India is one of our largest trading partners, and there is real potential to expand what we do together across energy, investment, trade, tourism and education, helping to create jobs and business opportunities for Western Australians,” Mr Cook said.
“The opening of UWA’s Mumbai campus marks a significant milestone in Western Australia’s growing relationship with India and Maharashtra.”
The official opening is one of many events on Mr Cook’s agenda as he travels to India and Vietnam on an investment and trade mission until 25 September.
Much of the trip’s focus is on showcasing the state’s economic strength across sectors such as energy, education, primary industries, investment and workforce development.
The trade mission will also position the state as a long-term partner in energy transition, bolster direct aviation links, promote primary industries and expand training pathways.
The newly opened UWA Mumbai campus welcomes its first students this month, giving them a globally recognised UWA qualification while staying in-country.
The UWA is a global-100 university and a founding member of Australia’s Group of Eight.
Students in Mumbai will have access to undergraduate and postgraduate programs across STEM and business, cybersecurity, computer science, data science and AI, global business enterprise and innovation, business management, MBA and IT.
WA’s Tertiary and International Education Minister Dr Tony Buti said: “With the expansion of UWA’s international footprint through the opening of its first international branch campuses in Mumbai, the university is taking a bold step forward in their commitment to global academic excellence and international pathways, and creating a stronger bridge between Australia and India.
“This builds on Western Australia’s strong foundation in delivering quality international education through its existing offshore branch campuses and transnational education partnerships.”
Additionally, the campus will support partnerships between Western Australia and Maharashtra in areas such as technology, AI, cybersecurity, critical minerals and clean energy.
