Upgraded dog parks to get more bite

Canberra’s dogs are to enjoy upgraded dog parks following the commencement of improvement works across three suburbs from next week (24 May).

The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate said upgrades at the Tuggeranong dog park on Mortimer Lewis Drive would see additional trees planted and the installation of new irrigation.

The Directorate said the small dog park would be closed for about a week, depending on weather, from Monday (24 May) and the large dog park would be closed for about four weeks from Tuesday (25 May).

“The closest dog park open for use during these closures is Duffy which is located off Warragamba Avenue,” the Directorate said.

“The installation of irrigation is being completed ahead of spring where there will be a three-month closure of the dog park to allow new grass to establish,” it said.

“We are looking into the installation of a temporary dog park for the spring closure.”

The Directorate said the Duffy dog park would also receive improvements with works expected to commence in late June.

It said the Yarralumla dog park was still closed to allow the upgrade works to be completed more efficiently, including the establishment of new grass.

“As part of the improvements being undertaken, a special ‘dog track mix’ was sprayed on the park surface which is a mixture of water, mulch, grass seeds, fertiliser and soil mix to prevent soil erosion and protect new grass while it grows,” it said.

“It will continue to establish without heavy foot and paw traffic.”

The Directorate said it had incorporated enhanced landscaping around the park and installed irrigation infrastructure to help manage the turf.

It said 60 pine tree species were scheduled to be planted on site on Tuesday (25 May) and trees in the non-heritage areas of the dog park would be replaced with deciduous species to enable better light penetration in winter.
