South Australia’s youngest kids in at-risk populations are to have access to a Moderna COVID-19 vaccine following a recommendation from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation.
Announced by Australian Minister for Health and Aged Care, Mark Butler, 500,000 doses of the specific vaccine for children aged six months to under five years have been secured and initial supplies are to be distributed to vaccination sites by 5 September.
“Approximately 70,000 young children at higher risk of developing severe illness from COVID-19 will be able to receive a vaccination from 5 September,” Mr Butler said.
“At this stage, COVID-19 vaccination is only recommended for children aged six months to under five years with severe immunocompromise, disability, and those who have complex and/or multiple health conditions which increase the risk of severe COVID-19,” he said.
“Given the particular needs of this group of children and the small size of the cohort to be vaccinated, only a small proportion of vaccination sites will deliver this vaccine.”
The Minister said the sites would be identified on the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care’s Vaccine Clinic Finder and bookings would open later this month.
