The Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries says community projects will benefit from sharing in about $600,000 in unclaimed gambling winnings.
“The Gaming Community Trust grants program is now open, with funding between $20,000 and $50,000 available for eligible not-for-profit or charitable projects run by individuals or organisations,” the Department said in a statement.
“The Gaming Community Trust provides advice and recommendations to the Minister for Racing and Gaming on the distribution of funds from casino gaming and wagering prizes unclaimed for at least 12 months.”
The categories eligible to receive grants were Aboriginal Promotion; Disability Inclusion; Problem Gambling Harm Reduction; Community Sports Engagement, and Community Culture.
Clear benefits to the community must be demonstrated to receive a grant,” the statement said.
Minister for Racing and Gaming, Reece Whitby it was a fantastic initiative to see unclaimed winnings distributed to worthwhile community causes.
“I look forward to seeing community projects benefit where they create a more connected, vibrant Western Australia and help those facing disadvantage or vulnerability,” Mr Whitby said.
“What better way to disburse prize money that has not been claimed, while supporting a reduction in problem gambling.”
