Unclaimed renter bonds finding a home online

Consumer and Business Services (CBS) has reunited South Australian renters with unclaimed bonds measured in the millions.

Minister for Consumer and Business Affairs, Andrea Michaels said more than $3 million in historic unclaimed bonds had been returned to rightful owners, as CBS continued to step up efforts to return the money.

“In January, CBS introduced a new system to assist tenants wishing to access their bond money that had remained unclaimed,” Ms Michaels said.

“Since the start of the year, more than 1,700 applications to return unclaimed bonds had been approved,” she said.

Ms Michaels said there were a number of reasons why bond money could go unclaimed.

“People may have provided incorrect banking details, or failed to provide a forwarding address,” she said.

“At a time when South Australians are facing unprecedented cost of living pressures, every dollar counts – which is why I’m pleased to see CBS take action to ensure this money is being returned to its rightful owners.

“They’ve made it easier for people to check whether they are indeed owed money and lodge a claim.

“For those who feel they may still be owed money, I’d urge them to visit the CBS website to see if they are entitled to a bond refund.”

In a statement, CBS said people could check if they had an unclaimed bond on the CBS Bond Status Register by searching the bond or guarantee number, or the address of the property rented.

“If an unclaimed bond is found that belongs to you, you’ll be given the option to apply for it to be repaid,” CBS said.
