Why do vacations, particularly school holidays, whizz by so fast when all we ever want is for them to last a little longer? We were away for a seven-day getaway, but it felt like we were only gone for one day!

We had an amazing time during an ultimate children’s vacation at Sunway Resort Hotel in Malaysia. It was contentment at its best. Staying at the flagship five-star hotel, parents and children alike, were able to unwind together in its new Waterventure family fun suites. The youngsters enjoyed a wealth of activities, creating awesome memories in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur that will last a lifetime.

Here — at Asia’s leading fully-integrated premier hospitality and entertainment destination — new experiences were created for exceptional celebrations, with warmth and assurance.

Located in the heart of Sunway City Kuala Lumpur we discovered world-class dining at Gordon Ramsay Bar & Grill, hopped between exhilarating rides at Sunway Lagoon theme park and indulged in retail therapy at Sunway Pyramid shopping mall. We were embraced by luxury and comfort as extraordinary outings were woven into each day.

Reminiscing, those lazy afternoons spent at a wonderfully laidback pace feel real. Nothing says relaxing by the swimming pool quite like a chaise lounge chair, perfect for laying under the sun, taking a nap or chilling out with a favourite book.

Back from our sojourn, and it sometimes feels a bit disorienting, almost as if we had never actually had a break? That can’t be!

Conversely, according to experts, people’s perception of time makes the holidays seem shorter than the working days. I then learned about a phenomenon known as the ‘holiday paradox’ after reading Time Warped: Unlocking the Mysteries of Time Perception by British author, radio presenter and podcast host Claudia Hammond.

In it she delves into the mysteries of time perception and draws on the latest research from the fields of psychology, neuroscience and biology, and uses original research on the way memory shapes our understanding of time and offers advice on how to better manage our own.

What you experience, basically, and what you actually remember can be very different.

“The holiday paradox is caused by the fact that we view time in our minds in two very different ways — prospectively and retrospectively,” Hammond says. “Usually these two perspectives match up, but it is in all the circumstances where we remark on the strangeness of time that they don’t.”

Sure, there are ample reasons why you should get away from work for the sake of good health and wellbeing, but time functions differently during a retreat.

Our unforgettable stay was part of the ultimate kids vacation package for two adults and two children that included welcome amenities, daily buffet breakfast (which was delicious on the Sunset Terrace), free kids’ meals at The Resort Cafe, complimentary access to Wonderland Explorers and Waterventure (the resort’s aqua play zone where children can make a splash in shallow pools and a water playground) plus afternoon tea, evening cocktails and canapes at the Premium Leisure Lounge.

During the stay, senior general manager of Sunway City Kuala Lumpur Hotels, Alex Castaldi, said: “Sunway City Kuala Lumpur is the ultimate family resort — a destination within a destination that delights all ages with its fantastic facilities. Following our recent transformation, we can now accommodate families in comfort and style … family holidays are among life’s most precious moments and we look forward to helping our guests create memories that last a lifetime.”

According to late neuroscientist Daniel Kahneman, happiness theory is the idea that we have two selves, the experiencing self and the remembering self, and that the remembering self influences our overall happiness more than the experiencing self. He introduced this theory in Thinking, Fast and Slow.

“[There’s a difference] between experience and memory … it’s the difference between being happy in your life, and being happy with your life. And those are two very different concepts.”

An Israeli-American cognitive scientist, Kahneman was a 2002 Nobel Memorial Prize winner in economic sciences and is best known for his work on the psychology of judgment and decision-making.

It’s part of the nature of life for time to accelerate as we age. It’s best to focus on the positive and enjoy life to the fullest because in the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take!
