Three diverse holiday packages offer an authentic Aboriginal expedition on Kangaroo Island, an immersing interactive experience in Brisbane and an option to uncover the natural beauty of Rottnest Island.

Explore the cultural and natural heritage of Kangaroo Island, in South Australia, through Sealink’s new First Nations tour led by Ngarrindjeri elder Mark Koolmatrie. Known as Nurrunga, or the ”place of Nurunderi”, the island holds profound social significance and offers a rich landscape of stories and sacred sites.

This one-day tour takes visitors through the island’s rugged beauty while connecting them with the ancient traditions and knowledge of the Ngarrindjeri people.

The experience begins with a scenic coach and ferry transfer from Adelaide/Tarntanya and includes a tour of significant locations on the island. Mark will share insights into native bush foods and medicinal plants that have been used by his ancestors for generations, and participants will enjoy a two-course lunch made from local produce.

An early morning pick-up from the hotel makes for a scenic coach journey to Cape Jervis taking in the picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula with its vineyards, coastal views and rolling hills. On arrival, board the SeaLink Kangaroo Island ferry for the 45-minute crossing to Penneshaw. Here you will meet your host and guide.

Mark will accompany you on a 45-minute walk in Penneshaw investigating Australian bush foods and bush medicines and he will discuss the culturally enriched stories of sites of deep significance. The narratives will be from the beginning of the Kalowinyeri (creation), unfolding the layers of history, tales, and traditions of the local tribes to the current custodians of Kangaroo Island.

Your next stop will be at Seal Bay Conservation Park, where you will hear about the sealing industry through Ngarrindjeri eyes and how Pungari the seal is an ancient being and good friend of Kondoli the whale.

The Indigenous day tour, which is a 16-hour day from Adelaide, operates until March 2025.
