Transport ACT’s Active Travel Office has put its weight behind Women’s Health Week this week, spreading the word to women that bike riding has multiple health benefits.
According to the Office, women often don’t make time to prioritise their health.
It says they cycle at about half the rate of men, despite making more short trips within their local community.
It said its campaign Spoke Up! was about helping women prioritise their health by exploring opportunities to build more cycle trips into their daily travel routine.
As part of the week’s events the Office held an informal evening bringing together women experienced in everyday cycling with others who were new, including e-bike users.
It also joined the Heart Foundation to host community stalls which provided the opportunity for women to find out what they needed to make cycling for short trips easier.
The Active Travel Office has a new parents meet-up planned for tomorrow (6 September) at the Belconnen Learn to Ride Centre which will let kids practice their skills in a safe environment and teach parents more about cycling with small children.
“Other community organisations will also be there to discuss skills programs, modified bicycles for people with disabilities and more,” the Office said.
It said tomorrow also marked the return of Females in Training’s (FIT) popular weekly sessions which run from spring through to autumn.
It said the sessions were for women who wanted to improve their general bike handling skills and confidence or who wanted to ride recreationally in a group.
