The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) is reminding trail bike riders to do the right thing by staying on formed roads in Victoria’s forests, parks and reserves.
The Department said that as the days become warmer and COVID-19 restrictions eased, trail bike riders in regional Victoria were expected to flock to State forests to enjoy the outdoors.
“Riding off-road has a significant impact on the environment by causing soil erosion and damage to native vegetation,” DELWP said.
“Walking tracks are not designed for motorbikes and riders pose a risk to others using the trails,” it said.
DELWP said riders must hold a motorcycle licence or learner’s permit and motorcycles must be registered.
“Unregistered motorbikes, quad bikes, all-terrain vehicles and side by side vehicles cannot be legally operated in state forests,” it said.
“When riding, you are sharing the forest.”
It said trail bike riders should remember to stay on the formed roads and vehicle tracks; always ride with others and wear full personal protective equipment (PPE), including a helmet; always carry a first aid kit, as well as a reliable means of communication; unload and start trail bikes away from residents adjoining State forests; and keep speed and noise down when near camping and picnic areas, or approaching other forest users.
Further information on the rules and regulations for riding can be accessed on Forest Fire Management Victoria’s website at this PS News link.
