Three NT Fire and Emergency Services members have been recognised for their dedication in the King’s Birthday Honours List.
For contributions made to Bushfires NT and to women in the Northern Territory, Lee Humphries has been awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal. Humphries has been a vital part of Bushfires NT for almost three decades since starting out as the founding member of the Beatrice Hill Volunteer Bushfire Brigade.
She has since served in a leadership capacity as senior regional fire control officer, senior regional fire management officer and eventually assistant director of operations.
Ms Humphries has been acknowledged for setting a standard in a male-dominated industry, becoming one of the most respected and accomplished members of the organisation.
In addition, NT Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) senior station officer James Bromley has received the Australian Fire Service Medal for leadership and contribution to the community. Mr Bromley joined the NTFRS in 2013 and quickly climbed the organisational ladder.
He has excelled in firefighting operations and emergency response, receiving special acknowledgment for his consistent demonstration of leadership. Mr Bromley has been deployed in a series of high-profile incidents and emergencies, such as Samoa in 2019, the Tiwi Islands in 2023 and Christmas Island during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He is also a passionate advocate for firefighter wellbeing and mental health.
The final member of the NT Emergency Services to be honoured is former director Fleur O’Connor, who has been awarded the Emergency Services Medal for outstanding service to the community.
Beginning with the Virginia Bees Creek Volunteer Fire Brigade in 2011, Ms O’connor progressed to volunteer captain and has since led a diverse career in the NTES.
In 2019, she was appointed as the first female Chief Officer of the NTES. She provided strong leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and cyclones Claudia, Tiffany, Annika and Ellie, in addition to flood management and community evacuations.
