The Water Cooler: Comings and goings in the public service

A breakdown of the latest appointments in the Australian Public Service, the wider public sector and across the public services of the states and territories.

APS Senior Executive Service

Band 1

Simon O’Toole has been appointed as Assistant Secretary of the Digital Customer Service Branch in the Department of Parliamentary Services.

Zaid Ahmad, Christopher Wright and Christopher Jasson have been appointed as national managers of Services Australia.

Band 2

Ben Biddington and Sneha Chatterjee have been appointed as First Assistant Secretaries for Immigration in the Department of Home Affairs.

Graeme Grosse has been named as First Assistant Secretary for Compliance and Enforcement in the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Band 3

Michael Thomas, Michael Willard, Brooke Hartigan, Ciara Spencer and Brendan Dowling have been named as Deputy Secretaries in the Department of Home Affairs.

Other federal appointments

Professor Wesley Enoch has been appointed as the chair of the Australia Council Board of Creative Australia for a four-year term. Professor Enoch has been deputy chair since August 2023 and has been acting chair since Robert Morgan’s retirement in May.

States and territories

Former Deputy Premier of South Australia Dan van Holst Pellekaan has been appointed as the state’s next Small Business Commissioner for a three-year term from 11 August. Mr van Holst Pellekaan served as a Liberal MP from 2010 to 2022.

Owen Whittle has been appointed to Western Australia’s Salaries and Allowances Tribunal, an independent statutory authority responsible for setting the remuneration of senior public officials.

Dr Linzi Wilson-Wilde has resigned as the director of Forensic Science Queensland, effective immediately. Her resignation comes after she was stood down in June over several reports of DNA contamination. Executive manager of forensic biology Natasha Mitchell will act as director until a permanent appointment is announced.

Screen Queensland director Patricia Alner has been appointed as chair of the Screen Queensland Board after the retirement of Roslyn Atkinson. John Kotzas, Venesa Gleeson and John Morris have also been appointed to the board.

Steve Davidson has been named as the Queensland Residential Tenancies Authority’s new CEO, while Paul Spiro, Connie McKee and Colin Cassidy have been appointed as directors.
