Director Tim Sutton (Donnybrook, Funny Face, Dark Night) works from a Greg Johnson script in this epic wild west adventure starring Sam Worthington, Heather Graham, Colson Baker and Thomas Jane.

A couple of convincing performances and striking visuals make for watchable Blu-ray viewing of The Last Son, an action tale of the Wild Wild West set in the 1900s.

In a plotline that’s atypical, the spotlight is on a father who becomes the devil for his kin. It’s a bleak and brutal journey.

An ex-army man, Isaac LeMay, brings doom upon his children to save his own life from a Cheyenne Curse. As the hunt begins, he starts killing his progeny until only the last son remains.

LeMay (Worthington, Somersault, Avatar) is a notorious gunslinger and womaniser on the wild western Sierra Plains. On hearing a prophecy that he is destined to be killed by one of his many children, he starts hunting down his offspring to prevent his own death.

Cal (Colson Baker, better known by his stage name Machine Gun Kelly) is the son of LeMay and Anna (Heather Graham, Diggstown, Boogie Nights). He joined the army and trained as a Gatling gun loader, but after being discharged, he’s haunted by his past and about being neglected by his parents. Cal then goes on a brutal killing spree of his own, becomes an outlaw, robs banks and kills law enforcers.

Also searching for LeMay are various bounty hunters, and a reticent sheriff, Solomon (Jane, The Punisher, Dirty Laundry), who just happens to have history with Anna. Also among LeMay’s targets is a daughter, Megan (Emily Marie Palmer), who has a directness about her that’s likeable.

The languid pace allows us to appreciate some particularly scenic panoramas captured by cinematographer David Gallego.
