The Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate has released a new plan for the village of Tharwa to ensure its unique character is protected into the future.
According to the Directorate the Tharwa Village Plan resulted from collaboration with Tharwa residents and surrounding communities and set a vision with planning principles and strategies to guide the village’s social, environmental and economic sustainability into the future.
Releasing the Plan, Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Mick Gentleman said it recommended the enhancement of the village core as an attractive, social, recreational and creative hub for the local community while also attracting visitors to experience the qualities of a rural village.
“The Cuppacumbalong Homestead Precinct expresses and enhances the story of Tharwa’s Aboriginal and European history,” Mr Gentleman said.
“The Tharwa Village Plan also facilitates the ACT Government’s commitment to establishing better infrastructure for Tharwa by including a new non-potable water supply for fire-fighting in the village.”
He said the Plan was an important step forward for the Tharwa community and one he hoped would be embraced and built upon for generations to come.
The Minister said that to implement the plan, a Draft Variation to the Territory Plan (DV359) had been prepared.
“The Draft Variation introduces changes to the Tharwa Precinct Map and Code to ensure that the recommendations in the Tharwa Village Plan can take place,” Mr Gentleman said.
