Temporaries offered permanence at Education

The Department of Education has confirmed that more than 800 staff who have been on very long term temporary or casual contracts are to be offered permanent employment.

Deputy Director General of the Department, Shannon Cook (pictured) said it was part of a new, automatic process for staff who had been working for the Department for more than four years.

The new policy began this week and affected staff will be sent a letter of offer for permanent employment in the coming weeks.

The move was communicated to the Together Union by Mr Cook in a letter which in part said the Department would continue to manage offers of permanent employment on an individual basis into the future.

“Eligible temporary employees will receive a personalised offer of permanent employment in their current role and at the hours that they are currently working,” Mr Cook said.

“Eligible casual employees will also receive a personalised offer of permanent employment of no less than the greater of the hours worked by the employee in the week immediately preceding the offer, or the average hours per week worked by the employee over the last two years.”

Mr Cook said Departmental officers had been working to develop a streamlined process for the identification of eligible employees, offering of permanency, managing of acceptances and processing of appointments to support the successful roll-out of the important initiative.

He said it was anticipated that the appointment process for employees with greater than four years’ continuous service would be finalised during school Term Two.
