The Territory’s scholarship program for ACT public school teachers is now open offering local teachers the chance to to further their skills with Masters Qualifications and studies in targeted areas of education.

Announced by the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Development, Yvette Berry the Teacher Scholarships Program, part of the ACT’s Future of Education Strategy, provides further education for teachers as they continue to work in ACT public schools.

“The ACT Government’s Future of Education Strategy sets out a plan to invest in public school teachers, acknowledging that teachers are expert professionals highly skilled at working with their students to lead them through their learning journey,” Ms Berry said.

“Pursuing further study can be expensive, and that can be a barrier to teachers interested in expanding their own education,” she said.

“This scholarship program takes that financial burden out of the equation and allows teachers to become even more expert in their profession.”

Ms Berry said that this year, the Teacher Scholarships Program would offer two streams of scholarship, the Priority Area Scholarship and the University of Canberra (UC) Master of Education scholarship.

“Teachers are the single most important factor, after family background, when it comes to the educational outcomes of children,” she said.

“It’s so important that the ACT Government supports teachers to develop, not just for their own aspirations, but also because it is an investment in the next generations to come.”

She said the Priority Area Scholarships ranged from $2,000 to $10,000 and were targeted to the priority areas of languages, students with complex needs or challenging behaviours and STEM subjects.

Ms Berry said there were 30 UC Master of Education scholarships available in partnership with the University, through the Affiliated Schools Program.
