The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate (TCCS) has announced that Canberra Tree Week for 2019 is due to kick off this Saturday, 4 May.

TCCS said the week’s program was packed with green activities across Canberra including events at the National Arboretum Canberra, The Australian National Botanic Gardens and at local libraries.

It said these included Hug a Tree Day, a kite making class, free guided walks through Forest 20 at the National Arboretum and tree planting activities.

Tree Protection Officer, Sam Ning said Canberra Tree Week began in 2014 and every year it gets bigger.

“Trees are important to Canberrans and our extensive urban forest is a big part of our lives in the ACT,” Mr Ning said.

“Tree Week is a great chance to celebrate our trees, and we are encouraging Canberrans of all ages to get involved.”

He said the ACT Tree Climbing Championships would be held at the Botanic Gardens on Saturday (4 May).

“The tree climbing competition consists of six events across the day including work climb, open ascent, speed climb, throwline, aerial rescue and masters.

“This year’s event also includes a kids’ climb,” Mr Ning said.

“It is a great spectator sport for the whole family”.

He said that on the same day the Harvest Group Market Stall will be held at the National Arboretum with a mountain bike ride through Kowen Pine Plantation to be held on Sunday.

He said TCCS is to host a symposium at the Botanic Gardens on Friday, 10 May offering an opportunity to hear from some of the tree industry’s leading experts.

“Other activities include a Friends of ACT Trees dinner, poetry and a photography competition,” Mr Ning said.
