The Tasmanian Government is inviting stakeholders in agriculture to have their say on the future of the sector in light of the state’s new long-term strategy.
Minister for Primary Industries and Water Gavin Pearce said the government was delivering for the industry.
“The discussion paper released today seeks feedback on the key policy priorities for the new long-term agriculture strategy, ensuring we have the right settings in place to support industry,” Mr Pearce said.
“We know that we need to work together to move our state forward – and that’s what this strategy is all about.”
The strategy being formulated aims to guide how the government can work with the industry to boost agricultural productivity and unlock opportunities in important areas such as agritourism, education, freight, infrastructure and workforce development.
Implementation of technology, the use of data-driven practices and the adoption of precision agriculture are also priorities.
The creation and development of the new long-term strategy comes five years after the government’s Competitiveness of Tasmanian Agriculture for 2050 White Paper.
“Agriculture is a pillar of Tasmania’s economy, with a farm gate value of nearly $2.5 billion in 2022-23,” Mr Pearce said.
“The collective achievements of farmers, agribusinesses, industry groups, researchers, rural communities and government have allowed us to remain on track to reach our AgriVision 2050 target to grow the annual farm gate value of agriculture to $10 billion by 2050.”
The government is now seeking feedback on its discussion paper. After this phase of the plan, the industry will have the opportunity to contribute through roundtable discussions.
Next year, a draft strategy will be released.
