The Victorian Government is making public transport easier to use, expanding the “tap and go” system to trams.
Passengers will now be able to pay for their trip on every tram using a card, smartphone or smartwatch.
“From today, you can step off a train and straight onto a tram using the same phone, watch or bank card,” Minister for Public and Active Transport Gabrielle Williams said.
“Four in five tap-and-go trips are already being made with a phone or smartwatch — showing more Victorians are leaving the wallet at home.”
Public transport users will be able to use the same card or payment device whether they are catching trams or trains, or switching between the two.
Tap-and-go payment systems are rolling out across every myki-enabled train station in the state.
Since the start of June, more than 700,000 taps have been recorded, four in five of which have been made with a phone or smartwatch.
Now that trains and trams have joined the tap and go system, buses are next, with upgrades rolling out on myki-enabled bus routes from next month.
Victorians will also continue to benefit from half-price public transport fares until the end of the year, saving commuters hundreds.
The government has encouraged concession patrons, seniors and passengers under 18 to continue using concession cards.
Passengers travelling where myki is not online are being advised to continue using a paper ticket or an eTicket.
