New women recruits to the Taiwan Public Service in 2018 outnumbered men for the fifth consecutive year, the Ministry of Examinations has announced.

Last year, 139,090 women applied for Public Service examinations, equivalent to 51.9 per cent of the applicants, the Ministry said.

Records showed that 25,326 women applied for advanced-level exams (55.9 per cent of the applicants for that exam), 41,177 for middle-level exams (60.2 per cent), 18,218 for entry-level exams (63.8 per cent) and 31,136 for special local exams (61.1 percent).

The records showed that 3,034 women who took the advanced-level exams (50.3 per cent) were accepted for jobs, 457 who took the entry-level exams (55.8 per cent) were accepted and 923 who took the special local exams (52.1 per cent) were accepted.

Women outnumbered men in acceptance for the Public Service in every exam category except for the middle-level exams, after which 1,192 women were accepted for positions, or 49.2 per cent of exam-takers, the Ministry said.

Over the past five years, women have made up 56–68 per cent of the applicants taking Public Service exams for administrative positions, but data also showed that fewer women each year applied to take the exams, the Ministry said.

Men have accounted for most of the applicants taking exams for technical positions, making up more than 65 per cent of applicants to exams for technical jobs and 92 per cent of those taking exams for entry-level technical jobs, it said.
