The Department of Education’s VacSwim Program is inviting Year 12 students to register for a fully-funded training program to become qualified swimming instructors in time for summer.
VacSwim is to run over the summer holidays and, to be eligible for the training Program, students must be currently enrolled in Year 12 and at least 17 years old.
Minister for Education and Training, Sue Ellery said the Program would be available across the metropolitan area and in specific regional centres.
Ms Ellery said participants would also receive continued support and mentoring.
“Through the Program, trainees will obtain an accredited swimming teacher qualification, including a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) qualification,” she said.
“Upon completion of the Program, students can then apply for VacSwim swimming instructor positions across the State.”
Ms Ellery said there were also continuing opportunities for further employment through teaching swimming in the Department of Education’s Interm Swimming Program to start in February and run throughout the school year.
“Swimming and spending time near water is a much-loved pastime for many Western Australian people,” she said.
The Minister said the VacSwim and Interm Programs were an important part of teaching kids how to swim and act safely in the water.
“This valuable initiative provides Year 12 students with the opportunity to become qualified swimming instructors, gain paid employment and make a difference in the community,” Ms Ellery said.
