Belconnen residents could be living with the evidence of the recent storm damage for some months according to City Services.
Examining the danger, the Directorate said the expected recovery from the storm event on 3 January was likely to be long, ongoing and possibly take months to complete due to the scale of the damage and the safety risks it presented.
“To date, over 2,000 tasks have been identified from requests made by the public through Fix My Street and through completed clean-up audits,” the Directorate said.
“Many tasks require significant work and time to complete with damage ranging from downed branches, felled canopies and entire trees which have been uprooted,” it said.
“Priority work is being given to high-use areas, such as roads, driveways/pathways and areas around shopping centres, then to areas in front of residences and then to other areas on streets such as parkland and open spaces.”
The Directorate said that the most impacted suburbs were Charnwood; Dunlop; Evatt; Florey; Flynn; Giralang; Hawker; Higgins; Holt; Kaleen; Latham; Melba; Macgregor; McKellar; Scullin; Spence and Weetangera.
“Storm-related jobs are taking place in other suburbs as well,” it said.
The Directorate said that although the storm had long since passed, there were still dangers in impacted areas and it was important that people remained vigilant around damaged trees and knew what to do in an emergency.
It advised people not to park under trees on nature strips; to call Triple Zero (000) if they were in a life-threatening situation; to call ACT SES on 132 500 for assistance in storms or floods; and to look out for their neighbours by passing on information and offering assistance if it was needed.
