New district-based plans are to be developed across the ACT to find out what Canberrans value most about their neighbourhoods with a view to incorporating the findings into the Territory’s new planning system.

Minister for Planning, Mick Gentleman said the Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate wanted to better understand what Canberrans valued about where they lived.

“We want to make sure future planning decisions consider what’s important to you,” Mr Gentleman said.

“In our improved planning system, development assessments will factor in what you’ve told us,” he said.

“We will be undertaking district planning for eight districts of Canberra to capture these values.”

Mr Gentleman said the planning would include drawing on examples and lessons from district level planning in other cities across Australia and the world.

He said the Directorate was consulting in Belconnen; Gungahlin; Molonglo; Inner North; Inner South; Tuggeranong; Weston Creek: and Woden Valley.

“Canberra is a diverse city and every area has different features that make it a great place to live,” he said.

“I encourage everyone to get involved and help us with the district planning for your area.”
