I don’t think about submarines often but can’t believe anyone would want to spend time in those metal tubes underwater.
I have met a few dedicated navy submariners and I have nothing but sympathy for them.
It’s not the kind of vessel one can duck outside of to get some fresh air and watch the waves go by.
So the gathering of former submariner, Senator Rex Patrick, Professor Hugh White from Strategic and Defence Studies at the Australian National University (ANU) and Peter Jennings, the Executive Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute to discuss the $80 billion project to build 12 submarines for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) was a wake-up call for this formidable project.
With COVID-19 impacting the country, it’s probably the last thing this Government needs to contemplate, but the wisdom of the speakers is absolutely something to reconcile.
