Students to stay home in Term 2

ACT public school students will continue to learn from home in Term 2 as part of the Department of Education’s COVID-19 pandemic response.

Minister for Education, Yvette Berry said teachers had worked hard in recent weeks to have an online syllabus ready for the start of Term 2.

“This will be different from what families have experienced over the last few weeks, while teachers have been developing a new kind of learning,” Ms Berry said.

“Teachers will set a number of tasks for the week for students to complete at home, and they will be checking in with students regularly over the phone, email or through video conferencing.”

She said while most public school students would undertake home learning, a reduced number of school sites would remain open for students who were unable to do so.

“Students at these sites will be supervised by Out of School Hours Care staff supported by teaching staff, and allied health and support staff,” Ms Berry said.

She said the students would be undertaking the same remote learning program as their peers at home.

The Education Directorate has asked families to obtain and complete an on-site registration form from their school if they are unable to have their children at home.

“This will assist the Government to confirm how many and which school sites will be required to host children who continue to attend,” Ms Berry said.

“This will also consider students who are usually in a Learning Support Unit or who have other additional needs.”

She said the ACT’s four specialist school settings would continue to be available for students enrolled at them.

“Muliyan, the Off Campus Flexible Learning Program will also be available for those who need it,” the Minister said.

More information about remote learning can be accessed on the Directorate’s website at this PS News link.
