A group of older-age street artists has joined a program funded by the Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate (TCSS) to revitalise the Woden Seniors building with a newly painted facelift.

Under the guidance of a local artist, the Silver Sprayers are set to recapture the artistic talent that saw them enliven another site in Woden as part of TCSS’s Streetwise community art program.

Announcing the new project, Minister for Seniors and Veterans, Gordon Ramsay said a number of the Silver Sprayers involved in it had previously helped produce a series of murals at the Woden bus interchange.

“Following the success of this project they have started work on the Woden Seniors building,” Mr Ramsay said.

“The Streetwise program aims to support older Canberrans as they learn to create street art and then practise their new-found skills to rejuvenate public areas in the ACT.”

He said the Woden Seniors building was a great location in need of some new vibrant artwork, and it was another great opportunity for Streetwise participants to hone their skills.

“The Streetwise project will benefit the Seniors Club by discouraging graffiti tagging; enhancing the aesthetics and amenity of the area; and helping to create a more inclusive and welcoming space for older people and others in the community,” Mr Ramsay said.

He said the Streetwise program first started in 2018 when 30 older Canberrans attended a series of workshops run by local street artists, Ben Reeve and Dai Cameron.

“Following these workshops, the budding artists then produced the Woden bus interchange murals,” Mr Ramsay said.
