Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show Western Australia to be leading the nation in the recovery of jobs since the outbreak of COVID-19.

The ABS data show 62 per cent of the jobs displaced in Western Australia by late April had been recovered by 11 July.

They also showed that Western Australia had recorded the lowest decline in the number of jobs in the nation, down 3.1 per cent compared to a 5.6 per cent fall nationally since 14 March, when Australia recorded its 100th COVID-19 case.

The data also showed that the industries hardest hit by job losses, including the accommodation and food services, and arts and recreation services, had improved significantly as restrictions had been eased.

In addition, jobs for women and younger workers had also recovered strongly after being disproportionately impacted by restrictions.

Welcoming the news, Treasurer, Ben Wyatt said it was an encouraging sign that the jobs displaced due to the COVID-19 restrictions continued to be recovered.

“This latest data release continues to reflect the positive impacts of the easing of restrictions in Western Australia,” Mr Wyatt said.

“This is in line with other indicators such as job advertisements, which have almost returned to pre-COVID levels.”

He said Western Australia’s hard border had allowed the State’s economy to open up faster than any other, allowing businesses to restart and people to get back to work sooner.
