Director: Matt Ratner, Umbrella Entertainment.

Cast: Billy Crystal, Ben Schwartz, Eloise Mumford, Grace Gummer.

The title is atypical and you have to admit the advertising is authentic — witticisms abound, and it may also be a little tawdry. The two qualities come to life when it’s the people who embody that process, and in this case it’s the enthused pairing of Schwartz and Crystal as two new friends who support each other.

It’s an unlikely combination, a stand-up comedian with shortcomings and an alcoholic dermatologist give each other the conviction to face the failures in their lives.

Their chemistry is the key to the successful formula. After four years of chasing his stand-up comedy dream in Los Angeles, 34-year old Scott Rollins (Schwartz) has crashed and burned … hard. Left with little money and a fledgling at best ‘career’, Scott has no choice but to regroup and return home to his parents’ house in Long Island.

While trying to figure out what to do next, Scott pines after his ex, Becky Brookes (Mumford), a successful photographer who has since married a former mutual friend.

On a night out at the bar, Scott strikes up an unlikely friendship with an eccentric dermatologist, Marty (Crystal), who has regrets of his own. Marty and Scott both help each other find the courage to face the failures in their lives.

In this case, life is all about second chances. With brisk writing, a great cast and self-assured direction from Ratner, you can’t help but support this collaboration.

Chemistry is the key, and Standing Up, Falling Down has got it!
