The summer sporting season has come to an end, with City Services closing all Government sportsgrounds for autumn renovations.
Announced by the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry, the two-week closure is to allow City Services crews to complete vital maintenance.
“The mild summer weather and consistent rainfall have already provided ideal conditions for renovation works on some sports grounds, including improvements to turf and applying fertiliser,” Ms Berry said.
“This work will help ensure sportsgrounds remain in good condition for the many different sporting groups and individuals that use our ovals during winter,” she said.
“The team will also use this time to install goal posts and line marking to reflect the change in codes using the ovals.”
Ms Berry said the maintenance period was carried out twice yearly, at the beginning and end of the summer sport season.
The Minister said Government managed 127 irrigated sportsground sites across the Territory, with 882 individual sporting fields for hire.
“Government liaises closely with sport peak bodies when grounds need to be closed for maintenance or are too wet to play,” she said.
“I’d like to thank all sportsground users for their patience whilst we undertake these essential works to our sports grounds.”
Ms Berry said ACT sportsgrounds were set to re-open on Friday 1 April.
