Financial grants for 70 of the ACT’s sporting organisations to meet the costs of more training and improved club facilities have been announced by the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry.

Ms Berry said the $2.4 million Sports and Recreation Grants Program allocations would help local sporting organisations continue to create quality, diverse and safe physical activity experiences and facilities.

“It’s important everyone feels supported and inspired to improve their health and wellbeing through sport and recreation,” Ms Berry said.

“The Women Sport and Recreation Participation and Leadership Program is included in this grants round.

“The program…provides financial assistance to support participation, education and training activities for women and girls involved in sport across the ACT.”

She said that under the program for 2019, nine successful applicants would receive funding, including Canberra Ultimate, receiving $10,000 to deliver an ultimate Frisbee program for girls aged 12-to- 17 years, and Canberra Underwater Rugby (pictured), awarded $3,100 to purchase female-friendly equipment and assist with developing a women-only beginner program.

Ms Berry said that other organisations receiving funding this year included Squash ACT to install a security system and CCTV to allow Woden courts to have 24-hour access to pre-approved paying participants ($18,000) and YMCA Sailing Club to upgrade safety boats to support a range of sailing activities ($13,650).
