Three pavilions on sporting grounds around Canberra are to receive upgrades to their change rooms in line with the Territory’s Female Friendly Change Rooms @ Sporting Facilities guidelines.
Announced by the Minister for Women and Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry, the upgrading works commenced this week at Amaroo District Playing Fields, Wanniassa District Playing Fields and Deakin District Playing Fields.
“The work is being undertaken as part of the ACT Government’s fast track infrastructure program,” Ms Berry said.
“The ACT has the highest sport and recreation participation rates in the country and is a leader in women’s sport across elite, semi-professional and community levels,” she said.
“The ACT Government is committed to reducing barriers to participation for women and girls in sport and recreation.”
Ms Berry said the upgrades meant the facilities would provide a welcoming space for all athletes and include lockable shower cubicles; power points for accessories adjacent to wet areas; individual toilet cubicles; privacy considerations; and shelving in appropriate locations for personal accessories.
She said that since 2016, over $1.1 million had been allocated to upgrade 16 sporting and recreation facilities across the Territory to ensure they included female friendly additions.
“Improving facilities and changing rooms is part of a range of measures being undertaken by the ACT Government to support women in sport,” Ms Berry said.
