Sport and Recreation has announced that pubs and clubs across the State are to be permitted to trade for longer hours during major sporting events.
Announcing the move, Minister for Customer Service, Victor Dominello said events in Australia would include the National Rugby League (NRL) State of Origin series and the NRL Grand Final, with standard 10pm Sunday trading extended to midnight on those occasions.
“A range of statewide extensions has been approved for venues showing live broadcasts, including the ICC Cricket World Cup in the United Kingdom and the Women’s Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup in France,” Mr Dominello said.
“Given many of these events are in Europe on a different time zone, it makes sense to extend trading hours to accommodate fans.”
He said the extended trading hours would not apply to takeaway sales of alcohol.
“Venues already approved to trade during or beyond the extended hours will be able to operate as usual,” the Minister said.
“Hotels and clubs must still comply with any individual trading restrictions or other special conditions that apply to their licences under the Liquor Act.”
He stressed that the extended trading hours did not override the existing lockout laws.
