SPAIN: PS jobs plan to counter unemployment

The Spanish Government says it will create 100,000 jobs in the Public Service in an effort to counter post-pandemic unemployment.

In what Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero called “the largest ever offer of public employment,” the increase will be mainly financed by European Union stimulus aid of around 140 billion euros ($A220 billion).

The hiring blitz resumes a trend in rising public employment that was briefly halted at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last year.

The public sector increased by more than 28,000 in 2019, while figures for 2021 are already at 30,500 places, adding together those for the General State Administration, State Security Forces and organisations and the armed forces.

Speaking during the Budget debate in Parliament, Ms Montero (pictured) said that in the three years of the current Government public employment growth had been 73 per cent higher than that of the six years of the previous administration.

“This is a Government that is committed to quality public services, the welfare state, employment and people,” Ms Montero said.

She noted that figures from the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy showed unemployment had fallen by 69,159 people in the southern Province of Andalucía in July, a drop of 7.7 per cent.

“Nationally, the number of registered unemployed fell by 197,841 in July, a reduction of 5.4 per cent, which is the largest fall in any month in our history,” Ms Montero said.
