The Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning has launched a Queensland Space Industry Strategy, a plan for the State to become Australia’s leading centre for space capability.

Queensland’s Strategic Defence Advisor for Aerospace, retired Air Vice-Marshal Neil Hart said that by 2025, the State’s space industry would be recognised as a leading centre in Australasia for launch activities, ground systems, Earth observation, niche manufacturing, robotics and automation for space.

“The Queensland Space Industry Strategy strengthens Queensland’s existing capabilities by supporting infrastructure capability, human capability and commercial capability,” Mr Hart said.

“It will grow Queensland’s industry by connecting it to international markets and the greater supply chain, leveraging downstream industries.”

He said the strategy looked to the future, with the aim of adding between $3.5 and $6 billion to Queensland’s economy and up to 6,000 jobs by 2036.

“Queensland’s East Coast location with access to the Equator and capability to launch into multiple orbits is perfect for launching,” Mr Hart said.

“It already has Australia’s highest concentration of aerospace manufacture and repair services while it boasts radio-free regions with clear skies and coverage into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.”

He said Queensland already had an advanced robotics and remote asset management capability built through research for the mining industry and the geographical need to operate remotely.

Minister for State Development, Cameron Dick said the $8 million Queensland Space Industry Strategy was part of the Government’s plan to create more jobs in more industries for Queenslanders.

“It will accelerate Queensland’s space industry into a new growth phase, establishing its position as an Australasian leader for space technologies and launches,” Mr Dick said.

“Queensland has already gained the reputation as Australia’s space coast, and through this strategy our Government is looking to unlock maximum benefit for local businesses and workers.”
