Science week a formula for super scientists

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is marking National Science Week this week (14-22 August) by sharing stories from its “superstar scientists”.

The NPWS said the Week was Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology, and provided an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to people’s understanding of the environment.

“We’re profiling some of the amazing people and projects of the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) to show where STEM skills can take you,” the NPWS said.

“Whether expanding your own knowledge and curiosity, or understanding more about what a career as a scientist looks like, there’s something for every science mind,” it said.

NPWS said Soil Scientist with the DPIE, Melissa Moyce was part of a specialised soil and land assessment team where she helped evaluate soil conditions and assessed landscapes across the State.

“The soil information and advice our team provides is incredibly important and relied upon by a wide range of people, from researchers and policy-makers to farmers and land managers,” Ms Moyce said.

“Soils can take millennia to develop, but their health and their ability to sustain ecosystems can be compromised in a fraction of that time, which is why it’s really important that we manage our soils appropriately,” she said.

NPWS also shared the stories of Vegetation Ecologist, Katrina Ismay; Social Scientist, Lee Huuskes; Ecologist, James Val (pictured); and Remote Sensing Scientist, Rebecca Gibson.
