Schools to have psychologists in mind

Graham Mackay is one of the new psychologists supporting ACT school students.

Five new psychologists have joined the ACT public school system for the 2020 school year, bringing the total number of school psychologists in the Territory to 81.

Spokesperson for the Education Directorate, Ross Hawkins said the appointment of the new psychologists was the fulfilment of a budget commitment.

“In the 2017/2018 Budget, the ACT Government committed to employ an additional 20 school psychologists – 15 were appointed and the remaining five are on board for Term One,” Mr Hawkins said.

“Young people thrive in environments where they feel safe and supported,” he said.

“However, we know many children and young people experience social, emotional, behavioural and mental health issues.”

He said such issues could impact on a child’s learning, relationships and personal development if left untreated.

“School psychologists play an important role in supporting the diverse needs of students, helping them to engage in learning and develop the skills to lead fulfilling lives,” he said.

“Our school psychologists work with families and school staff as well as other allied health professionals including speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and social workers to provide a thorough support network for students.”

Mr Hawkins said that in addition to providing counselling services, school psychologists would also help develop individual learning plans and assist in managing critical incidents.
