Two Perth primary schools are to benefit from a Department of Education program supporting the development and learning of young children who speak English as an additional language before they start school.
Maylands Peninsula Primary School and Bentley Primary School will trial the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Early Years Link program in 2021 for children aged three years and under.
The program provides playgroup sessions for six hours a week, with high levels of involvement from families. External Agencies will also provide any additional support required.
Minister for Education and Training, Sue Ellery said the program was similar to KindiLink for Aboriginal families with children before school age.
“It offers high quality play-and-learn sessions for children and their parents or carers at no cost,” Ms Ellery said.
“We want families with young children who speak a language other than English to get all the support they need before their children start school.”
She said the program would help to build the capacities and confidence of culturally and linguistically diverse families by developing strong relationships with school staff and their communities, introducing a smooth transition to kindergarten, and providing strong links with external services.
Both school communities have a significant number of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
Teachers and ethnic education assistants at Maylands Peninsula Primary School and Bentley Primary School will have training and continuing professional support to implement and deliver the program.
